Density of Children

Figure 3
Children density is a 3D map showing the density of children with in the City of Tacoma. It was created using block group level demographic data for ‘Sex by Age for the population under 20 years’ for Pierce county. Using Excel, the ages for kids 10 years old and younger was broken out (Table 1). This data was then joined to Census Block data for Pierce County. Using the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation tool, a kid density continuous surface map was created (Fig 3). This was then re-classed and masked to the City of Tacoma boundary (Fig2). Using ArcScene, this layer was then converted into a 3D model (Fig 1 & 4).

Median income is a 3D map showing the median income with in the City of Tacoma. It was created using ‘Median Income data for Block Groups in Pierce County’ data that was converted in Excel to table data for ArcMap (Table 2). This was then joined to block groups for Pierce County to create a new Pierce County Block Group Income layer (Pierce Income). The Pierce Income layer was then converted from polygons to points and clipped to include just Tacoma (Fig 7). This allowed me to use the inverse distance weighted (IDW) interpolation tool to create a continuous surface map for median income in Tacoma (Fig 6). Using ArcScene this layer was then converted into a 3D model (Fig 5).

Figure 9
The Schuster Parkway map was created using digital elevation model (DEM) data from the USGS (Fig 11). This was converted in to a hill shade map (Fig 10). Using ArcScene the hill shade layer was then converted into a 3D model (Fig 9). The 3D model was then exaggerated by 6.21444 (Fig 8).
